Fire hydrant inspection and flow testing — southeastern Idaho municipal system
- Overview

What Is Fire Hydrant Inspection?

Fire hydrants are a critical component of any municipal or private fire protection system — and like all infrastructure they require regular inspection, testing, and maintenance to remain reliable. A hydrant that fails during a fire event is not just a maintenance issue, it's a life safety issue. JAG Enterprises provides certified fire hydrant inspection and maintenance services that keep your system compliant and fully operational.

JAG Enterprises performs hydrant inspections to NFPA 291 standards — the nationally recognized standard for fire flow testing and hydrant marking. Our crews are experienced with a wide range of hydrant types and manufacturers, and we work with municipalities, fire districts, water utilities, and private property owners across Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.

Beyond inspection and testing JAG also performs hydrant maintenance, repair, and full replacement — giving you a single contractor to handle your entire hydrant program from annual inspections through end-of-life replacement.

- How It Works
1
System Review
Before field work begins JAG reviews the hydrant system map and maintenance history with the system owner. This ensures every hydrant in the system is accounted for and that any known problem areas are prioritized.
2
Physical Inspection
Each hydrant is physically inspected for visible damage, corrosion, improper drainage, missing or damaged caps, and clearance compliance. The hydrant is operated to verify it opens and closes fully and that the drain valve functions correctly.
3
Flow Testing
Hydrants are flow tested to NFPA 291 standards to measure static pressure, residual pressure, and flow rate. This data is used to evaluate system capacity, identify weak points in the distribution system, and verify hydrants meet required fire flow demands.
4
Color Coding
Following NFPA 291 guidelines hydrants are color coded based on their measured flow capacity — Class AA, A, B, or C — so fire departments can quickly identify available flow at any hydrant in the field.
5
Reporting and Documentation
A complete inspection report is provided for every hydrant inspected, including flow test data, condition notes, maintenance performed, and recommended follow-up actions. Documentation is provided in a format compatible with most utility management systems.
6
Maintenance and Repair
Any deficiencies identified during inspection are addressed — lubrication, packing replacement, valve seat repair, broken parts replacement, or full hydrant replacement if the unit is beyond repair. All work is documented in the inspection record.
NFPA 291 Compliance & ISO Ratings
Regular hydrant inspection and flow testing to NFPA 291 standards is a key factor in your community's ISO Public Protection Classification rating. A better ISO rating means lower insurance premiums for property owners in your service area. JAG Enterprises provides the documentation your system needs to support your ISO rating process.
