Pilot boring setup for a water line installation — Chubbuck, ID
- Overview
What Is Pilot Boring?
Pilot boring is a trenchless installation method that uses a steerable boring head guided by a locating system to achieve extremely precise line and grade. Unlike conventional boring, the operator can make real-time steering corrections throughout the bore — delivering accuracy within a quarter inch over distances up to 400 feet.
JAG Enterprises uses pilot boring for projects where grade is critical — sewer lines, gravity-fed water lines, and utility conduits that must meet strict engineering tolerances. Our crews operate throughout Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.

Sewer & gravity lines
Surface Disruption
Minimal — trenchless
- How It Works
1
Pit Preparation
Entry and exit pits are excavated at each end of the bore path. These are the only areas of surface disruption throughout the entire project.
2
Pilot Bore
A steerable boring head is launched from the entry pit. An operator uses a locating system above ground to monitor and guide the bore head in real time, making corrections to stay precisely on line and grade.
3
Accuracy Verification
Once the pilot bore reaches the exit pit the line and grade are verified against engineering specs before any pipe is pulled back.
4
Pipe Installation
The carrier pipe — sewer, water, conduit, or casing — is attached and pulled back through the bored path. The pits are then backfilled and the surface restored.
